Forty `Āhādīth        PART ONE

 

1-      إِنَّمَا الْأَعْمَالُ بِالنِّيَّاتِ وَإِنَّمَا لِكُلِّ امْرِئٍ مَا نَوَى (صحيح البخاري، كتاب بدء الوحي)

`Innamal- `a’mālu bin-Niyyāt wa-`innamā li-kulli-mri`in mā nawā

Deeds are determined by intentions alone. Man will only get that which he really intends (Saḥīḥul-Bukhārī).

 

2-      لَا يُؤْمِنُ أَحَدُكُمْ حَتَّى أَكُونَ أَحَبَّ إِلَيْهِ مِنْ وَالِدِهِ وَوَلَدِهِ وَالنَّاسِ أَجْمَعِينَ (صحيح البخاري، كتاب الإيمان)

Lā yu`minu `aḥadukum ḥattā ‘akūna `aḥabba `ilaihī min wālidihī wa- waladihī wan-Nāsi `ajma’īn

None of you truly believes unless I (the Holy Prophet Muhammad saw) become dearer to him than his parents as well as his children and all the people combined (Sahīhul-Bukhārī).

 

 

 

3-      مَنْ لَمْ يَرْحَمْ صَغِيرَنَا وَيَعْرِفْ حَقَّ كَبِيرِنَا فَلَيْسَ مِنَّا (مسند أحمد، كتاب مسند المكثرين من الصحابة)

Man lam yarḥam ṣaghīranā wa-ya’rif ḥaqqa kabīrinā fa-laysa minnā

He is not from among us who does not show kindness towards our young ones nor recognizes the right of our elders (Musnad Aḥmad bin Ḥanbal)

 

4-      لَا يَرْحَمُ اللَّهُ مَنْ لَا يَرْحَمُ النَّاسَ (صحيح البخاري، كتاب التوحيد)

Lā yarḥamul-Lāhū man lā yarḥamun-Nās

Allah does not show mercy to him who does not show mercy to the people (Saḥīḥul-Bukhārī).

 

5-      لَا يُؤْمِنُ عَبْدٌ حَتَّى يُحِبَّ لِأَخِيهِ مَا يُحِبُّ لِنَفْسِهِ (مسند أحمد، كتاب باقي مسند المكثرين)

Lā yu`minu ‘abdun ḥattā yuḥibba li-`akhīhī mā yuḥibbu li-nafsih(ī)

No servant (of Allah) truly believes unless he likes for his brother whatever he likes for himself (Musnad Aḥmad bin Ḥanbal).

6-      اَلْحَيَاءُ خَيْرٌ كُلُّهُ (صحيح مسلم، كتاب الإيمان)

`Al-ḥayā’u khayrun kulluh(ū)

Modesty is all virtue (Saḥīḥ Muslim).

 

7-      سِبَابُ الْمُسْلِمِ فُسُوقٌ (صحيح البخاري، كتاب الإيمان)

Sibābul- Muslimi fusūq

Insulting a Muslim is an evil (Saḥīḥul-Bukhārī).

 

8-      مِفْتَاحُ الْجَنَّةِ الصَّلَاةُ وَمِفْتَاحُ الصَّلَاةِ الْوُضُوءُ (سنن الترمذي، كتاب الطهارة عن رسول الله)

Miftāḥul- Jannati-ṣ- Ṣalā(tu) wa- miftāḥu-ṣ-Ṣalātil-Wuḍū`

The key to Paradise is the Daily Prayer and the key to the Daily prayer is Ablution (Sunanut-Tirmidhī).

 

9-      لَيْسَ الْخَبَرُ كَالْمُعَايَنَةِ (مسند أحمد، كتاب ومن مسند بني هاشم)

Laisal- khabaru kal- mu’āyanah

Hearsay is not like seeing (Musnad Aḥmad bin Ḥanbal).

 

10-  بَيْنَ الْعَبْدِ وَبَيْنَ الْكُفْرِ تَرْكُ الصَّلَاةِ (سنن الترمذي، كتاب الإيمان عن رسول الله)

Bainal- ‘abdi wa-bainal- Kufri tarku-ṣ-Ṣalah

What leads a servant (of Allah) to disbelief is the non-observance of the Daily Prayer (Sunanut-Tirmidhī).

 

11-  مَنْ بَنَى لِلَّهِ مَسْجِدًا بَنَى اللَّهُ لَهُ مِثْلَهُ فِي الْجَنَّةِ  (سنن الترمذي، كتاب الصلاة)

Man banā lil-Lāhī masjidan banal-Lāhū lahū mithlahū fil- Jannah

The one who builds a mosque for the sake of Allah, Allah will build a house for him in Paradise (Sunanut-Tirmidhī).

 

12-  خَيْرُكُمْ مَنْ تَعَلَّمَ الْقُرْآنَ وَعَلَّمَهُ (صحيح البخاري، كتاب فضائل القرآن)

Khairukum man ta’allamal- Qur`āna wa- ‘allamah(ū)

The best among you is the one who learns the Qur’ān and teaches it to others (Saḥīḥul-Bukhārī).

 

 

13-  اَلْمُؤْمِنُ مِرْآةُ الْمُؤْمِنِ (سنن أبي داوود، كتاب الأدب)

`Almu’minu mir`ātul- Mu`min

A believer is a mirror of another believer (Sunan abī Dāwūd).

 

14-  لَا يَدْخُلُ الْجَنَّةَ قَاطِعٌ (صحيح البخاري، كتاب الأدب)

Lā yadkhulul- Jannata qāti’

The one who severs the ties of kinship will not enter Paradise (Saḥīḥul-Bukhārī).

 

15-  إِنَّ الدَّالَّ عَلَى الْخَيْرِ كَفَاعِلِهِ (مسند أحمد، كتاب باقي مسند الأنصار)

`Inna-d-Dālla ‘alāl- Khair ka- fā’ilih(ī)

The one who urges others to perform goods gets the reward of the doer (Musnad Aḥmad bin Ḥanbal).

 

16-  اَلصَّوْمُ نِصْفُ الصَّبْرِ وَالطُّهُورُ نِصْفُ الْإِيمَانِ  (سنن الترمذي،كتاب الدعوات عن رسول الله)

`Aṣṣawmu niṣfu-ṣ-Ṣabri wa-ṭ-Ṭuhūru niṣful- `Īmān

Fasting is half the patience and cleanliness is half of the faith (Sunanut-Tirmidhī).

 

17-  إِنَّ الصَّدَقَةَ لَتُطْفِئُ غَضَبَ الرَّبِّ وَتَدْفَعُ عَنْ مِيتَةِ السُّوءِ  (سنن الترمذي، كتاب الزكاة عن رسول الله)

‘Inna-ṣ-Ṣadaqata latuṭ-fi`u ghaḍaba-r- Rabbi wa-tadfa’u ‘an mītati-s-Sū`(i)

Giving charity cools down the wrath of Allah and averts death in undesirable circumstances (Sunanut-Tirmidhī).

 

18-  أَفْضَلُ الذِّكْرِ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَفْضَلُ الدُّعَاءِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ  (سنن الترمذي، كتاب الدعوات عن رسول الله)

‘Afḍalu-dh-Dhikri: ‘’ Lā `ilāhā `illal-Lāhū ‘’ wa-‘afḍalu-d-Du’ā`i: ‘’ ‘Alhamdu lil-Lāh ‘’

The most excellent way of remembering Allah is to proclaim: ’’There is no one worthy of worship except Allah.’’ And the best supplication is to profess: ’’All praise belongs to Allah. ’’ (Sunanut-Tirmidhī)

 

19-  دَعْ مَا يَرِيبُكَ إِلَى مَا لَا يَرِيبُكَ (سنن النسائي، كتاب الأشربة)

Da’ mā yarībuka `ilā mā lā yarībuk(a)

Leave aside that which makes you doubt for that which does not make you doubt (Sunanun-Nisā’ī).

20-  لَا يَشْكُرُ اللَّهَ مَنْ لَا يَشْكُرُ النَّاسَ (سنن أبي داوود، كتاب الأدب)

Lā yashkuru-l-Lāhā man lā yashkurun-Nās(a)

He who is not grateful to people is not grateful to Allah (Sunanut-Tirmidhī).

 

21-  إِذَا أَتَاكُمْ كَرِيمُ قَوْمٍ فَأَكْرِمُوهُ (سنن ابن ماجه، كتاب الأدب)

`Idhā `atākum karīmu qawmin fa-`akrimūh(ū)

If a people’s dignitary pays a visit, honour him (Sunan ibn Mājah)

 

22-  إِنَّمَا بُعِثْتُ لِأُتَمِّمَ صَالِحَ الْأَخْلَاقِ (مسند أحمد، كتاب باقي مسند المكثرين)

`Innamā bu’ith-tu li-`utammima ṣāliḥal- `akhlāq(i)

[The Holy Prophet Muhammad saw said]:’’I have been raised to complete the best of morals.’’ (Musnad Amad bin anbal)

 

 

23-  خَيْرُكُمْ خَيْرُكُمْ لِأَهْلِهِ وَأَنَا خَيْرُكُمْ لِأَهْلِي (سنن ابن ماجه، كتاب النكاح)

Khairukum khairukum li-`Ahlihī wa-`ana khairukum li-‘Ahlī

The best among you is the one who is best to his family and I am the best of those who are good to their families (Sunan ibn Mājah).

 

24-  إِنَّ الَّذِي لَيْسَ فِي جَوْفِهِ شَيْءٌ مِنْ الْقُرْآنِ كَالْبَيْتِ الْخَرِبِ (سنن الترمذي، كتاب فضائل القرآن عن رسول الله)

`Innal-Ladhī laisa fī jawfihī shai`un minal- Qur`āni kal- Baitil- Kharib(i)

The case of one who does not learn any portion of the Qur’ān is like that of an abandoned house (Sunanut-Tirmidhī).

 

25-  لَا يَحِلُّ لِمُؤْمِنٍ أَنْ يَهْجُرَ مُؤْمِنًا فَوْقَ ثَلَاثٍ (سنن أبي داوود، كتاب الأدب)

Lā yaḥillu li-mu`minin `an yahjura mu`minan fawqa thalāth

It is not permissible for a believer to leave (desert) his brother for more than three days (Sunan abī Dāwūd).

 

 

26-  مَنْ غَشَّنَا فَلَيْسَ مِنَّا (صحيح مسلم، كتاب الإيمان)

Man ghash-shanā fa-laisa minnā

One who cheats us has nothing to do with us (Saḥīḥ Muslim).

 

27-  الْمُسْلِمُ مَنْ سَلِمَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ مِنْ لِسَانِهِ وَيَدِهِ (صحيح مسلم، كتاب الإيمان)

`Almuslimu man salimal- Muslimūna min lisānihī wa-yadih(ī)

The true Muslim is he from whose hands and from whose tongue other Muslims are safe (Saḥīḥ Muslim).

 

28-  اَلْمَرْءُ عَلَى دِينِ خَلِيلِهِ فَلْيَنْظُرْ أَحَدُكُمْ مَنْ يُخَالِلْ (مسند أحمد، كتاب باقي مسند المكثرين)

`Al-Mar`u ‘alā dīni khalīlihī fal-yanẓur `aḥadukum man yukhālil

Man is likely to be on the religion [way of life] of his friend, hence he should watch out who he befriends (Musnad Amad bin anbal).

 

 

 

29-  لَيْسَ الْغِنَى عَنْ كَثْرَةِ الْعَرَضِ وَلَكِنَّ الْغِنَى غِنَى النَّفْسِ (صحيح البخاري، كتاب الرقاق)

Laisal- Ghinā ‘an kathratil- Gharaḍi wa- lākinnal- Ghinā ghinan- Nafs(i)

Wealth is not abundance of goods; rather, real wealth is contentment of the heart (Saḥīḥul-Bukhārī).

 

30-  إِيَّاكُمْ وَالظَّنَّ فَإِنَّ الظَّنَّ أَكْذَبُ الْحَدِيثِ  (صحيح مسلم، كتاب البر والصلة والآداب)

`Iyyākum waẓ- Ẓanna fa-`inna-ẓ-Ẓanna `akdhabul- Ḥadīth(i)

Beware of suspicion, for it is the most false speech! (Saḥīḥ Muslim).

 

31-  اِتَّقُوا النَّارَ وَلَوْ بِشِقِّ تَمْرَةٍ فَإِنْ لَمْ تَجِدْ فَبِكَلِمَةٍ طَيِّبَةٍ (صحيح البخاري، كتاب الأدب)

`Ittaqun- Nāra wa- law bi-shiqqi tamratin fa-in lam tajid fa-bikalimatin ṭayyibah

Give charity to protect yourselves from the Fire even if it be by giving a portion of a date; and the one who does not have even that much should say a word of goodness (Saḥīḥul-Bukhārī).

32-  إِيَّاكُمْ وَالْحَسَدَ فَإِنَّ الْحَسَدَ يَأْكُلُ الْحَسَنَاتِ كَمَا تَأْكُلُ النَّارُ الْحَطَبَ (سنن أبي داوود، كتاب الأدب)

`Iyyākum wal- ḥasada fa`innal- ḥasada ya`kulul- hasanāti kamā ta`kulun- Nārul- Ḥaṭab(a)

Beware of the fire of jealousy, because it consumes good deeds just as fire consumes wood (Sunan abī Dāwūd).

 

33-  اَلْمَجَالِسُ بِالْأَمَانَةِ (مسند أحمد، كتاب باقي مسند المكثرين)

`Almajālisu bil-`Amānah

Sittings should be considered as a trust (Musnad Amad bin anbal).

 

34-  مَا قَلَّ وَكَفَى خَيْرٌ مِمَّا كَثُرَ وَأَلْهَى (مسند أحمد، كتاب مسند الأنصار رضي الله عنهم)

Mā qalla wa-kafā khairun mimmā kathura wa-`alhā

A little that suffices one’s need is better than plenty that makes [someone] oblivious (Musnad Amad bin anbal).

 

35-  طَلَبُ الْعِلْمِ فَرِيضَةٌ عَلَى كُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ (سنن ابن ماجه، كتاب المقدمة)

alabul- ‘ilmi farīḍatun ‘alā kulli muslim

Seeking knowledge is an obligation for every Muslim (Sunan `ibn Mājah).  

 

36-  أَكْرِمُوا أَوْلَادَكُمْ وَأَحْسِنُوا أَدَبَهُمْ (سنن ابن ماجه، كتاب الأدب)

`Akrimū `awlādakum wa-`aḥsinū `adabahum

Be noble to your children and cultivate good manners in them (Sunan ibn Mājah).

 

37-  أَحَبَّ الْأَعْمَالِ إِلَى اللَّهِ أَدْوَمُهَا وَإِنْ قَلَّ (صحيح البخاري، كتاب الرقاق)

`Aḥabbal- `A’māli `ilal- Lāhi `adwamuhā wa-`in qalla

The most beloved deeds to Allah are those which are performed with regularity, even if they are small (Saḥīḥul-Bukhārī).

 

 

 

38-  لَيْسَ الشَّدِيدُ بِالصُّرَعَةِ إِنَّمَا الشَّدِيدُ الَّذِي يَمْلِكُ نَفْسَهُ عِنْدَ الْغَضَبِ (صحيح البخاري، كتاب الأدب)

Laisa-sh- Shadīdu biṣ-Ṣur’ati `innama-sh- Shadīdul- Ladhī yamliku nafsahū ‘indal- Ghaḍab(i)

The strong person is not he who defeats others in wrestling. The strong person is he who has full control over himself during his anger (Saḥīḥul-Bukhārī).

 

39-  اَللَّهُ فِي عَوْنِ الْعَبْدِ مَا كَانَ الْعَبْدُ فِي عَوْنِ أَخِيهِ (صحيح مسلم، كتاب الذكر والدعاء والتوبة والاستغفار)

`Allāhū fī ‘awnil-`abdi mā kānal- ‘abdu fī ‘awni `akhīh(ī)

Allah will help a servant [of His] as long as the servant helps his brother (Saḥīḥ Muslim).

 

40-  اَلْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنْ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى (صحيح البخاري، كتاب الزكاة)

`Alyadul- ‘ulyā khairun minal- yadis- Suflā

The upper hand [that gives] is better than the lower hand [that takes]. (Saḥīḥul-Bukhārī)
